FUTURE I am looking to step into a new role that will challenge my existing knowledge and years of practical experience, implementing it within the field of User Experience and User Interface Design.
HISTORY I put myself through university with my own savings, working in the IT department of a high school. After 3 years, I had saved enough to attend my first year of university.
Coming out of my undergrad I already had a student loan, so I worked for another year after my practical year. I was given the opportunity to work part-time whist I read my honours degree, also part-time, over two years, to minimise my debt.
I spent a further 3 years working as the sole architect on the church extension of Bryanston Bible Church. I was responsible for the drawing work, council submissions, as well as on-site assistance to the Project Manager when the project broke ground.
As the project neared completion, a friend and my now boss was looking for a person who could cover many roles in his family business, Participate Technologies.
PRESENT I am foremost a husband and a father, and am incredibly proud of my family. It is the main reason that I’m looking to retreat from a career in the events industry, which often entails extended travel away from my family.
The experience gained in the designing of varied and complex buildings in my architecture degree, and subsequent years in the events industry, have helped to develop my problem-solving skills.
This includes time spent with clients in understanding their wants and needs, subsequent workable design interactions, and ultimately shaping a product that will meet requirements and exceed expectations.
I am Participate Technologies’ Media Manager, and one of the Event Specialists, catering to helping companies make their meetings, training sessions and conferences more interactive. I have built up our website through two design phases, and have dealt the numerous clients and institutions on a continual support basis.
In my personal capacity in 2019, I completed the User Experience Design course on the University of Cape Town’s Online Campus. User experience aids in my current role, and has identified my UX career ambitions.
